It’s pretty easy to parallel Dance to a Rockstar. The big, romanticized view of the life they lead, the performing, the lack of money, the Capitalisation… and it’s easy to chase Dance as though it has Rockstar status – giving up your time and money, trying to get close to it in any way possible…standing out in the pouring rain for one opportunity at an audition of the dance you always wanted to do… *ahem*
How far do you go for your gig? It’s a thought I’ve had recently… In order to immerse myself in the dance world, I’ve found myself applying for positions remotely related to dance just so I can have a glimpse of it in my life. Employers, like Rockstars, see right through most ploys that aren’t genuine, so how far do you keep pushing? If I primarily want to be a performer, isthat the thing I focus on, and in the meantime stick to a part time job in something completely unrelated? Or, is it better to find a job in the field, leave yourself open to opportunities you desire, but carve a place in the world for something that you’re passionate about, albeit you expressing this passion in a sideways fashion?
I don’t want my Rockstar to join the 27 club in my life… I want to befriend this Rockstar, encourage it, and be not only a groupie, but a permanent part of the day to day existence. And I’d like to do that without throwing my knickers on a stage to get attention. Possible? I hope so. I’ll keep you posted.
