Being a successful professional dancer means continuous mental and physical adaptations that can create new experiences, new movement potential. It creates such a sense of excitement, of everyday adventure; to be attuned to new and ever evolving tactile experience which directly affects your experience of the world around yourself.
It can be difficult to explain this excitement. It’s almost like saying it’s a continual burst of escapism – but without escape. It’s grounding and very much present in reality.
I found a YouTube clip of a talk given by Matt, an informed and very intelligent dancer I knew back in university. He’s amazingly articulate in describing the experience of dancers, and explaining that that experience is not exclusive to those people; the cognitive development and experience is open to anyone ready to experiment with and enjoy a sense of being. It’s encouraged that each and every person engage in their tactile environment, to stretch to the lengths of their physical form in order to learn, adapt and improve.
Here are some snippits that I took from Matt’s talk:
– “Getting into your body gives you the opportunity to get out of your head without having to be off your face”
– “To eliminate risk, we must eliminate experience” – and what an awful thing that would be!
– “The way we move directly affects our state of being, and as a bunch of Human’s, Being, that’s really important to remember.”
Movement potential is something to be excited by. Certain concepts Matt describes indicates back to what I was writing of the other day: the Nine Lines of Movement. This imagery that can create a dynamic change in the body that forces us to be more focused and engaged within ourselves.
Consider what it would be like to be an aware, empathetic and engaged being, and you’re on your way to truly being a mover. Perhaps a dancer. You won’t look back.
