Monday’s Mentor: Eleanor Sikorski

I’m beginning to look to London for more inspiration. Here’s a dance artist that caught my eye: Eleanor Sikorski.

Sikorski is a London born dance artist – a choreographer, performer and improviser.

Eleanor’s choreographic endeavours are part of her ongoing attempt to create dance which reads as easily as sentences. Her work revolves around patterns, language and objects which reference the social world. The stage is a place where ‘everyday’ activities become monumental and absurd.

Eleanor is co-director of Trumpet Creepers Improvisation Ensemble  – a group of dancers working to present improvisation in both traditional and unusual contexts; creating unhinged but highly tuned performances.

As one of six members of Hiru Dance Organisation, Eleanor has recently been part of the group’s performative exploration of private and public spaces; organising the event The Public House – A pop-up home for performance, and touring The Cave and Lazy Susan, Meanwhile Dances for festivals and events

Since graduating from the London Contemporary Dance School Eleanor has worked for choreographers Eva Recacha, Seke Chimutengwende, Jamila Johnson-Small and Louise Mochia.

She has an MA in performance from LCDS which included a year in EDge Dance Company touring work by Wally Cardona, Rick Nodine and Frauke Requardt.

Eleanor is a contributor and co-editor of Bellyflop Magazine. Follow this link for a list of her articles. She has also written dance reviews for Resolution! Review and Londondance.com.

She sounds like an interesting lady indeed, and I was happy to see improvisation popping into the mix. While it seems a strong part of the Australian dance culture, I haven’t seen its appearance so strongly here in the UK. Transcending the use of everyday objects in performance is something that interests me – I think there is a very lucrative inspiration starting point with objects and situations we all engage with. I have yet to learn more about this dancer/choreographer, but it’s an interesting platform to begin.

    1. I’m happy to be found! I’m still quite spartan with information, but i’d love to come to your performances… do you have any coming up?
